Take Your Look to the Next Level

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction uses a device to permanently remove targeted fat cells from a wide variety of body areas. The device separates fat cells from where they are stored and suctions them away, typically without bruising, bleeding, and swelling.

Also known as “lipo,” this treatment is minimally invasive and can often provide an excellent option for people who have been unable to eliminate unsightly pockets of fat through other methods. Following the removal of fat stores, the surrounding skin is tightened using BodyTite, a radiofrequency device, to give that contoured look.

What to Expect

Your Liposuction Procedure

Your liposuction will be performed in our outpatient facility, allowing you to go home on the same day. Rarely, an overnight hospital stay may be necessary. As mentioned earlier, Dr. Fisher is trained and experienced in techniques that allow liposuction patients to avoid general anesthesia by using inhaled and intravenous medications to alleviate anxiety and pain and make them comfortable.

The procedure starts with the placement of tumescent lidocaine in the areas to be suctioned, then allowing time for the local anesthetic to render that area sensation-free. We then use an ultrasound cannula to loosen the fat in that area from the underlying structures that hold them in place before suctioning them out of your body with the liposuction cannula. Various surgical techniques and technologies are available depending on your goals and target areas, including some that may involve radiofrequency to tighten the skin around the areas that were suctioned. You and your doctor will discuss the procedure fully and answer any questions that you may have.

Liposuction Recovery and Aftercare

Make sure you have arranged for someone to drive you home and that you have some help around the house for at least a night or two.

Your doctor may require you to have surgical drains placed and for you to wear compression garments at all times except for showering for a specified period. We’ll want you to get up and move as soon as possible. Liposuction patients typically return to work in a week or less.

Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions

The patient who is a good candidate for liposuction is a person who has adopted a lifestyle change that includes proper nutrition, regular exercise, and has no medical problems. The patient cannot smoke or have an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

The possible side effects of liposuction are bleeding, infection, disfigurement, bruising, seroma, blood clots, penetration of the abdomen, and lidocaine toxicity.

No. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure and is not designed as a weight-loss tool. Liposuction will not treat stretch marks or cellulite.

Specific fat cells removed in liposuction are permanently destroyed and will not grow back. The fat that remains behind after liposuction can grow or hypertrophy and return you to your pre-liposuction appearance if you do not stick to a healthy nutritional regimen (with no sugar and low carbohydrates) with regular exercise. Maintaining a steady weight is critical to optimizing and maintaining your liposuction results.

Between three to five liters of fat can be removed in a single liposuction session.

The possibility of scars is always present; however, the tiny puncture wounds made in the skin for liposuction minimize scarring, as does the top-flight expertise you receive at The Aesthetic Plan.

The procedures are identical, but women typically store fat in their lower bodies, and men usually develop fat deposits in their abdomen, chest, and “love handles.”

Since liposuction is classified as a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not cover the costs.
